Description

I was entrusted to Mission Mayday because I needed extensive medical care and testing.

Socialisation

CATS

I have a high predatory instinct, so I can't live with cats. Outside, I absolutely want to chase them.

DOGS

I can live with a dog but I don't want to play with them. I prefer to play alone. I sometimes steal their bones.

CHILDREN

I like peace and quiet, so I would really be more comfortable with children aged 6 and over at home.

About me

I'm a sweet 13-lbs Teckel type dog, who's looking for a family willing to give me love and care until my last breath. At 10 years old, I have some experience under my belt, but I've still got a lot of good years ahead of me, and I'm sure someone will fall for my charm despite the fact that I need special care! My description will be a bit long to explain everything.

Behaviour-wise, I'm quiet, and my foster family says I'm a very good companion dog who likes walks and car rides. I enjoy snuggling up to humans and spending time with them, but I can be left alone without any problem. I can even sing Lady Gaga. If 'Bad Romance' comes on, I start howling at the top of my lungs. A real little diva!

I hardly ever use peepads any more, unless I'm left alone, and even though I'm not very fond of it, I'll let you trim my claws. I'm house-trained and love going outside, whatever the season. Squirrel hunting is one of my passions. I'm not the type to run away, I don't destroy things, and I don't guard resources. I love to take naps in the sun and sleep under the blankets to keep warm. Playing ball is my favourite game, and I like to chew on bones.

There are a few things you should know about me. I bark when someone knocks on the door and I snore loudly sometimes at night, but it's nothing serious, it's part of my charm. I don't like it when other dogs play, so I bark at them to stop. I'd be fine with a canine companion who's a "couch potato" like me, or as the only dog in the family.

I was lucky to have a dental procedure recently, so I now have beautiful teeth. It will be important to keep maintaining them, especially by brushing and not giving me tennis balls. Since my damaged teeth have been extracted, I'm developing new habits, and I'm finally able to bite into toys and chewing accessories!

I'm treated in dermatology at the Centre DMVET Montréal because I have allergies, which are most likely of environmental origin. I've often had ear infections and leg problems. I need a monthly injection of Cytopoint in the clinic and I eat Royal Canin Anallergenic kibble to keep everything under control. The budget for this can be around $300 a month.

I have Cushing's disease, which requires follow-ups (blood tests) from time to time to check that the dosage of my medication is still right. I'll need this treatment morning and night for the rest of my life (about $400 a month). It has helped me enormously! This disease made me drink and urinate excessively, I had episodes of tremors, I was overweight, and it seemed to make my skin problems worse. Without this medication, I can't have a good quality of life.

I also had a cardiac ultrasound because I have a heart murmur. I have degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD), but no worries, I'm still in the early stages of the disease. I have a leak in one of my heart valves. If my condition deteriorates with age, tests will have to be considered. I don't need any medication for this; I'll just need to have this monitored throughout my life.

About these medical conditions

Cushing's disease is an endocrine disorder caused by excessive cortisol production by the adrenal glands. Common symptoms include increased thirst and urination, weight gain, muscle weakness and skin changes such as thinning of the skin and formation of pigmentation spots. Treatment is aimed at suppressing cortisol production.

Degenerative mitral valve disease is a common heart condition in dogs. It is characterized by progressive degeneration of the mitral valve, causing blood to leak into the heart's left atrium. Treatment may include medication to improve heart function and manage symptoms if necessary, as well as regular monitoring of the dog's heart health. This is not my case at present.

Dachshund-type dogs are predisposed to intervertebral disc herniation due to their long spinal column. I have been receiving care since mid-February because I am suffering from back pain.

All medical documents will be provided to my adoptive family, and a member of the team will be able to discuss my needs with you. Of course, I'm a compassionate adoption, so I'll come with my accessories, as well as the medication and food I'll have left when I leave my foster family. I hope to quickly find a family who won't be afraid to open their hearts to me and who will take good care of me!
