Low-Cost or Free Spay/Neuter at Local Shelters

Canine and feline overpopulation is a serious issue in Quebec, caused by a variety of factors. Spaying and neutering have become one of the best ways to be a responsible pet owner and avoid contributing to the problem. Unfortunately, not everyone can afford the full price of the procedure — times are tough. Here are some resources that may be able to help:

1. Montreal SPCA (Montreal and surrounding areas)

The sterilization program allows low-income residents of Montreal to have their dogs or cats spayed or neutered for free. Affordable rates are also available for pet owners from other cities.

Priority for sterilization services is given to pregnant females or those at high risk of pregnancy (mixed-gender households, outdoor cats), unneutered animals with behavior issues, and emergency procedures.

2. Proanima (Montreal and South Shore)

This animal service organization offers sterilization programs for cats from low-income households ($114 + tax), as well as for stray cats found within its service areas (Trap-Neuter-Return-type program).

Their sterilization clinics are intended for low-income residents of their partner municipalities who wish to have their cat sterilized at a lower cost. The service includes: sterilization, core vaccine, pain relief, and deworming. To be eligible, the cat must be registered with the municipality.

3. SPA de l'Estrie (Sherbrooke)

This SPCA has a targeted sterilization program for cats belonging to low-income residents of the covered municipalities. You must obtain a referral pamphlet from one of their partner organizations. Your cat must be at least 6 months old. The procedure costs $60.

4. Félins Parmi Nous (Boisbriand)

This organization has a partnership with the city of Boisbriand to spay/neuter and microchip cats belonging to low-income residents living in the area, as well as stray cats in the sector. The cost is $45 per cat for private individuals. The annual microchipping days (in the fall) also include dogs.

5. SPCA of Quebec (Quebec City and surrounding areas)

The SPCA has a program with limited spots that open at the beginning of the year. It is important to plan ahead to secure a spot on time. Registrations are not accepted outside of this period.

The program is for cat owners living within the area covered by the organization who are experiencing financial difficulties. Applications are accepted by phone on the specified dates.

6. SPCA Lanaudière Basses-Laurentides

This SPCA offers a low-cost sterilization service for dogs and cats between 5 months and 5 years old who have no health or weight issues.

The fees are lower than those of a veterinary clinic. Additional services ($) available at the time of sterilization include anti-inflammatories, Elizabethan collars, vaccines, flea treatments, dewormers, and microchipping.
